The Healing Heat of Infrared Saunas

What do viruses, bacteria and toxins have in common with cardiovascular, obesity, edema, sports injury, cancerous and rheumatoid conditions? They can each be manipulated, influenced or destroyed with Hyperthermia, more commonly known as an elevated body temperature, or a fever.

It was 2000 years ago that Greek physician, Parmenides, stated “ give me a chance to create fever and I will cure any disease” Through time many methods have been used to induce this condition on the body including sweat lodges, hot mineral baths, steam baths, traditional dry heat or steam saunas and now infrared saunas.

Infrared saunas produce a unique type of heat, known as radiant heat, from a spectrum of light, which is the same as that of the sun. They produce a very warm, equal heat that penetrates the body to a depth of 1.5 inches.  The light rays move in the spectrum of 4 – 14 microns and are considered “vital rays” for human biological functions. Photo biologists found that this range of natural light rays improved enzyme function up to 500%.

If you hold your hands one-quarter inch apart, you can feel the radiant heat that our bodies emit naturally, this is the same conduction and vibration of energy produced by the sun and the infrared sauna.

Even more interesting is the fact that these light rays resonate at the same frequency as water molecules. Knowing that our bodies are over 70% water is the key to maximizing the value of the infrared sauna. Toxins are stored in our fat cells causing them to clump together, ultimately creating cellulite, edema, inflammation, degeneration and disease. The infrared rays penetrate the body and literally shake the cells releasing the toxins from them into the lymph fluid, which then releases the toxins through sweat, out of the body. Studies show cholesterol, mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, sulfuric acid, uric acid, ammonia, hydrocarbons, PCB’s, sodium, and other fat-soluble toxins are released out of our bodies through the sweat. Eliminating toxins though sweat eases the burden on our liver and kidneys.

Comparing the experience in an infrared sauna to that of a conventional sauna, I find my clients energized and rejuvenated as they come out of the infrared sauna rather than exhausted and drained.

The difference in their experience is the type of heat and the intensity of the air within the sauna. A traditional dry heat or steam sauna heats up the air to temperatures of 180-235’F. Hot air currents then contact the skin heating up the surface, creating a suffocating affect, especially for those with asthmatic, bronchial or menopausal conditions. With the heat penetrating the skin only millimeters deep we do not achieve a vibration of the cells required to detoxify the body. The excessive heat and increased body temperatures produced by conventional saunas present a safety and health concern for those with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, blood clots and diabetes.

An Infrared sauna is a comfortable 110 – 130’F producing air temperatures that are 50 –124’F cooler than the steam or dry heat sauna. Even the water in a container does not heat up during a sauna session. This vibrational, even heat warms the body in a way that is relaxing to the nerve endings causing vasodilatation, opening the bronchial airways. It is stimulating to the endocrine system, which in turn releases endorphins (feel good hormones) into the body, hence the feeling of rejuvenation.

Clients with chronic pain experience soothing relief as the heat penetrates stiff achy and spastic muscles. With repeated use we see an increase in the agility of the muscles and tightness in scar tissue relieved. Joint pain is relieved as circulation is improved and the muscles around the joints relax. With respect to the caution we must take with traditional saunas and health conditions, we find that the infrared rays actually enhance the function of the circulatory system without risk. Clients feel their metabolic rate, cardio out put, blood flow and heart rate increasing without the exhaustion experienced in other saunas. Doctors in Germany have been using radiant heat to improve cardiovascular conditioning for over 80 years. NASA has been using this technology since the 80’s to condition astronauts.

Clients with severe edema achieve successful results using a combination of the infrared sauna, lymphatic treatments, cleansing though homotoxicology and a change of diet. In addition they also experience a decrease in body mass and composition (weight loss). While the sauna is sweating out toxins and enabling fat cells to shrink, it also enhances the body’s ability to burn 300 calories during a 30minute session as it is increasing metabolism (similar to a 2-3 mile run). As their bodies become heat conditioned with repeated use, we see the metabolic rate increase and burn up to 800 calories per session.

Knowing that the therapeutic range of infrared rays can kill viruses and bacteria is a great support to my clients experiencing the most severe cold, flues and infections of our winter season. In addition to homotoxicology and good hydration, the infrared sauna is used to speed up their recovery time or ward off an oncoming seasonal illness.

Dealing with skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis can be challenging for clients. A client with severe rashes, spread over her back and buttocks experienced quick results as she cleansed with a homotoxicology protocol and three treatments in the infrared sauna.

Research shows that cancerous cell growth is inhibited with the use of infrared rays. The DNA of cancerous cells is damaged and the cell blood vessels are shriveled up with regular exposure to vital rays, thus it is recommended as part of my client protocol in cancerous conditions.

Clients generally prefer to use the personalized sauna service offered at Inside & Out Naturally, complete with music, robe, towels and shower. Aromatherapy is often added to enhance their experience. Those requiring long-term use may choose to purchase an infrared sauna.  I recommend they do some comparison research into all of the infrared sauna products on the market. Consideration should be given to a CSA certification, good quality ceramic tubes emitting continual rays of 4-14 microns and an internal sauna temperature of 110 – 135’F. Cedar is a wood that is antibacterial, mold, mildew and virus resistant. Remember that you have toxins in your scalp from shampoos, dyes and other hair products, so a sauna that you sit in will move more toxins than a body bag type radiant sauna. A quality warranty and easily obtained service package are also important.

Imagine being able to relax and sweat your way to health!
